The Best Manual Citrus Juicers

Three tools under $30 that do the job properly, live in a drawer, and have nothing to break.

A manual citrus tool is the correct purchase for more people than the market suggests. Citrus is already liquid in soft segments, so extraction is just pressure -- and a well-designed hand tool applies plenty of it. These are also the only juicers on this site with nothing to break, nothing to plug in and nothing to store on a counter.

The three mechanisms, by effort

Hinged squeezer

Two handles, a perforated bowl, half a fruit between them. You close the handles and your grip strength becomes the pressure. Chef'n's dual-gear version multiplies that grip, which is a genuine mechanical advantage rather than a marketing one. One piece, dishwasher safe, lives in a drawer.

Reamer

A ribbed cone you press and twist the fruit onto. It is the oldest design and the one that handles a wider range of fruit sizes -- OXO's is two-sided for exactly that. It is also the most demanding on hands, because it needs sustained twisting rather than a single squeeze.

Lever press

A long arm multiplies a short pull into high force. Manual presses are the most comfortable mechanism by a wide margin, handle the most volume, and are the only manual tool that will not tire you out over a dozen oranges. They are also heavy and they live on the counter. Best citrus presses covers the powered ones too.

Why a manual tool is worth owning even if you have a machine

Because nobody assembles and washes a cold press juicer for one lime. A hand squeezer covers the small jobs a machine makes absurd: a wedge of lemon over fish, two tablespoons of lime for a dressing, half a grapefruit at breakfast. People who own $600 juicers still reach for a $20 squeezer, and that is not a failure of the expensive machine.

It is also the reason a hand tool is the safest juicing gift at any budget: it cannot be a duplicate of something they already own, and it cannot be the wrong size for their kitchen.

A good hand tool earns its drawer space in cooking and cocktails, not just in juice.

One important limitation

Hand squeezers and reamers both require grip strength and sustained pressure. If your hands ache, if you have arthritis, or if grip is limited for any reason, a squeezer is the wrong tool and a lever press is the right one -- the lever replaces the demand on your fingers with a downward push from your arm and body weight. We cover this properly on citrus juicers for arthritic hands, because it is a real accessibility question that most roundups skip.

The picks in full

1. Best hand squeezer

Chef'n FreshForce Citrus Juicer

Chef'n · Under $100 · Our score 8.7/10

The dual-gear mechanism is the reason to choose this over a plain hinged squeezer: the gears multiply your grip, so the same hand pressure produces more force at the fruit. Chef'n states a perforated bowl that strains seeds and most pulp, and top-rack dishwasher safety. The 20 percent more juice claim has no stated comparison basis, so judge it on the mechanism rather than the number.

What works

  • The dual gear mechanism multiplies hand pressure
  • One piece, dishwasher safe, and it lives in a drawer
  • The cheapest tool on the whole site

What does not

  • The 20 percent claim is Chef'n's own and has no stated comparison basis
  • It still needs hand strength - read the arthritis guide before buying
  • Lemon and lime sized, not orange sized

Skip this if: You want a full glass of orange juice. Handheld squeezers are for a few ounces, not a breakfast habit.

2. Best reamer, and best for measuring

OXO Good Grips 2-in-1 Citrus Juicer

OXO · Under $100 · Our score 8.4/10

A two-size reamer over a 1.5 cup jug with a built-in strainer, dishwasher safe per OXO. The quietly useful part is the measuring markings: "juice of one lemon" becomes a number you can read rather than estimate, which matters if you bake or follow recipes precisely. All the effort is yours -- a reamer needs sustained twisting pressure.

What works

  • Two reamer sizes cover limes through grapefruit
  • Measuring markings on the jug
  • It will outlast several electric juicers

What does not

  • All the effort is yours
  • 1.5 cup capacity
  • No published yield figure

Skip this if: Your hands tire or ache. A reamer needs sustained twisting pressure, which is exactly what a press removes.

3. Best manual press

Zulay Cast Iron Citrus Press

Zulay Kitchen · $100–200 · Our score 7.7/10

No motor, no power, and far kinder to hands than either tool above: the lever does the force multiplication so you supply a short downward pull instead of a sustained grip. Zulay states dishwasher-safe construction and a 5 in cup that handles most fruit sizes. It is heavy and permanent on the counter, and listed prices vary enormously between retailers, so compare before buying.

Cleanup time
Zulay states it is dishwasher safe and easy to clean; no cleanup time publishedManufacturer claim: Zulay Kitchen · checked 2026-10-02

What works

  • The lever multiplies force, which is much kinder to hands and wrists than a reamer
  • No motor to fail
  • A 5 in cup handles most fruit sizes

What does not

  • Heavy and permanent on the counter
  • Listed prices vary enormously between retailers, so compare before you buy
  • No published yield figure

Skip this if: Counter space is precious. A cast-iron press is heavy, tall and does not go in a drawer.

Questions people ask

What is the best manual citrus juicer?
Chef'n's FreshForce for lemons and limes, because the dual-gear hinge multiplies your grip. OXO's two-sided reamer if you want measuring markings and a wider range of fruit sizes. A lever press if volume or hand comfort matters.
Are manual citrus juicers as good as electric ones?
For the juice itself, close enough that most people would not notice. What more money buys is effort: an electric reamer or a press does the work for you. The extracted juice is much the same.
Which is better, a squeezer or a reamer?
A squeezer is quicker and needs a single hand motion; a reamer handles a wider range of fruit sizes but needs sustained twisting. For lemons and limes, a squeezer. For grapefruit and large oranges, a reamer or a press.
Are hand squeezers dishwasher safe?
Usually, and it is worth checking. Chef'n states top-rack dishwasher safe for the FreshForce, OXO states dishwasher safe for its 2-in-1, and Zulay states the same for its cast-iron press.
Will a hand squeezer work for grapefruit?
Most are sized for lemons and limes. For grapefruit you want a two-sided reamer like OXO's, or a press with a 5 in cup like Zulay's.
