The Best Citrus Presses

A lever turns a short pull into enough force to empty an orange. The mechanism to buy for volume, and for hands.

A citrus press uses a lever to convert a short arm movement into force at the fruit. That is not a refinement over a hand squeezer, it is a different order of magnitude -- Hamilton Beach Commercial quotes up to 2,000 lb for its commercial press -- and it changes what squeezing a dozen oranges feels like.

Why a lever changes everything

A hand squeezer is limited by your grip. A reamer is limited by how long you can keep twisting. A lever is limited by your body weight and the length of the arm, which means you have far more available force and you spend far less effort accessing it.

The practical consequences: more juice from each fruit at the same effort, a dozen oranges without your hands complaining, and consistency across fruit rather than the last few being squeezed less thoroughly than the first. That consistency is why bars use presses -- a cocktail recipe needs the same amount of lime juice every time.

Presses and hands

This is the category's most under-discussed advantage. A squeezer and a reamer both demand grip and sustained pressure from the fingers and wrist. A lever press replaces that with a downward push using the arm and shoulder, which is a completely different physical demand.

If grip strength is limited for any reason -- arthritis, injury, age, anything -- a press is the mechanism to buy regardless of how little citrus you squeeze. We cover that properly on citrus juicers for arthritic hands.

Consistency is why bars use presses: the same amount of lime juice from every fruit, every time.

What a press costs you

  • Counter space, permanently. Hamilton Beach Commercial states 19.5 in of height and 11 lb. Breville's is 10.6 lb. Neither goes in a cupboard.
  • Money, for a single-purpose tool. A press does citrus and nothing else, at several times the price of a hand squeezer that also does citrus.
  • Warranty, oddly. Both Breville and Hamilton Beach Commercial state 1 year, shorter than the 2 to 3 years you get on much cheaper electric reamers.
  • Parts to wash. More than a hand squeezer, though they are simple shapes with no fine fiber mesh.

The picks in full

1. Best citrus press overall

Breville Citrus Press Pro 800CPXL

Breville 800CPXL · $200–400 · Our score 8.2/10

A powered lever: Breville states a die-cast arm, 110 W driving a Quadra-Fin acid-resistant cone, adjustable pulp control, and a dual-switch safety feature that stops the cone spinning until the arm is lowered with pressure. Four parts and all four are dishwasher safe. The combination of powered extraction and a lever is why this is a bar machine. 10.6 lb, 1-year warranty.

What works

  • The powered lever does the work, so no hand strength is needed
  • Adjustable pulp control, which most citrus juicers lack
  • Four parts, all dishwasher safe

What does not

  • Expensive and heavy for a single-purpose tool
  • 1-year warranty
  • Citrus only - it will not touch a stalk of celery

Skip this if: You juice two lemons a week. A 10.6 lb die-cast press is absurd for that, and a hand squeezer is not.

2. Best for genuine volume

Hamilton Beach Commercial 932

Hamilton Beach Commercial 932 · $200–400 · Our score 7.9/10

A commercial fixture, and the only product in this entire category that publishes a force figure: Hamilton Beach Commercial states the extractor arm creates up to 2,000 lb of pressure. Acid-resistant chrome and porcelain, NSF certified, with a swing-out collector cup and removable strainer cone and funnel. It is 19.5 in tall and 11 lb, and the warranty is 1 year.

Cleanup time
Hamilton Beach Commercial states the juice collector cup swings out and the strainer cone and funnel are easily removedManufacturer claim: Hamilton Beach Commercial · checked 2026-10-02

What works

  • The only pressure figure published by anyone in this category: up to 2,000 lb
  • Acid-resistant chrome and porcelain finish, built for constant citrus contact
  • NSF certified, so it is built to commercial hygiene standards

What does not

  • 19.5 in tall and 11 lb - a permanent counter fixture
  • 1-year warranty on a commercial-priced machine
  • Citrus only, and overkill for domestic volume

Skip this if: This is a 19.5 in tall, 11 lb commercial fixture. For a few lemons a week it is absurd, and a hand squeezer is the right answer.

3. Best manual press

Zulay Cast Iron Citrus Press

Zulay Kitchen · $100–200 · Our score 7.7/10

No motor, no power, nothing to fail. Cast iron with a 5 in cup that handles most fruit sizes, and Zulay states it is dishwasher safe. The lever does the force multiplication so your hands are not doing the work, which makes this the most accessible mechanism here. Listed prices vary enormously between retailers, so compare before you buy.

Cleanup time
Zulay states it is dishwasher safe and easy to clean; no cleanup time publishedManufacturer claim: Zulay Kitchen · checked 2026-10-02

What works

  • The lever multiplies force, which is much kinder to hands and wrists than a reamer
  • No motor to fail
  • A 5 in cup handles most fruit sizes

What does not

  • Heavy and permanent on the counter
  • Listed prices vary enormously between retailers, so compare before you buy
  • No published yield figure

Skip this if: Counter space is precious. A cast-iron press is heavy, tall and does not go in a drawer.

Questions people ask

What is the best citrus press?
Breville's 800CPXL for most people: a powered die-cast lever with adjustable pulp control and four dishwasher-safe parts. Hamilton Beach Commercial's 932 if you need genuine commercial volume, and Zulay's cast iron press if you want a lever with nothing to break.
Is a citrus press better than an electric juicer?
For volume and for hand comfort, clearly. A lever multiplies force in a way a motor spinning a cone does not, and it is far easier on grip. For a single glass a day an electric reamer is cheaper and smaller.
How much pressure does a citrus press apply?
Hamilton Beach Commercial states up to 2,000 lb for the 932, and it is the only brand in this category publishing a figure at all. Nobody else quantifies it, so we do not either.
Are citrus presses worth it for home use?
If you squeeze citrus in volume or if grip is a problem, yes. For a few lemons a week a press is a large permanent object doing a job a $20 drawer tool already does.
Are citrus presses hard to clean?
No. They have more parts than a hand squeezer but no fine fiber mesh to scrub. Breville states that the cone, collector, filter and dome are dishwasher safe, and Hamilton Beach Commercial states that its collector cup swings out and the strainer cone and funnel are easily removed.
